Mattur (Mathur), on the
banks of the river Tunga in Karnataka, is famous across India as the
Sanskrit village. Sanskrit is being spoken not just by the Sankethi
Brahmins of the 3,500-strong village, but also by other communities.
Villagers use Sanskrit here for their day to day conversation and it is
the language of the commoner in this village.
The Mattur school has one of the best records in the district and boasts of toppers year after year.
The teachers at the school say that learning Vedas and the chanting
have helped children with their memory and focus. Almost every house in
this village has an IT professional and many of them are working abroad.
They are proud of their culture and almost every NRI makes it a point
to attend rituals and festivals back home.
